About

Somers Fire and Rescue is a full service fire protection and emergency medical service Department of the Village and Town of Somers.  It is dedicated to protecting the life and property of Somers residents and nearby communities.  The Department delivers service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Resources & Equipment

Somers Fire & Rescue has the latest in equipment and technology to serve the residents of Somers and neighboring communities on mutual aid calls.  Equipment, technology, trained staff, and strict adherence to policy make Somers Fire & Rescue ready to professionally respond immediately to all fire and emergency situations.

A house fire may need from 2,000 to 20,000 gallons of water to extinguish.  The 39-foot Pumper Tanker, Engine 6314, has an on-board pumping system and its primary purpose is to transport large amounts of water to the scene which is especially valuable in Somers’ rural areas where fire hydrants are not readily available, and where natural water sources are insufficient or difficult to access.   It is the first to leave the station, taking with it 2,000 gallons of stored water.  This Pumper Tanker has the ability to pump, from a hydrant, lake, or pond 1,500 gallons per minute.

Additional engines, carrying up to 1,000 gallons are also available in addition to an Aerial Platform Truck, where firefighters have the ability to access high level structures, deploy an elevated stream of water, and have the ability to go “up and over” a roof, reaching a height of 104 feet.

At all times, it is the current policy of  the Somers Fire & Rescue Department, to have 5,800 gallons of water  “on wheels” ready to go.

Somers Fire Department has proudly received an ISO (Insurance Service Organization) rating of 4  as 2015.  Rating criteria included needed flow, receiving and handling fire alarms, fire department equipment and staff, and water supply.

When necessary, Somers Fire Department also deploys its specialized vehicle, the Grass Rig, when extinguishing a fire requires unique fire apparatus to negotiate difficult terrain in off-road situations such as grass fires in a field or forested area.  The “rig” is 4 wheel drive and has clearance for wheels and suspension to access off-road areas.

The Somers Fire and Rescue Department has a wide variety of tools and equipment “on wheels” ready to go.  The Department has approximately 800 feet of 5″ fire hose in addition to over 2,000 feet of additional accessory hose.  Jaws of life, cutters, ladders, axes, shovels, pipe poles, saws, air packs, various nozzles,  portable radios, infra-red cameras, gas detectors, generators and stabilizing equipment are all examples of “on board” pumper equipment.
