Somers Fire & Rescue smoke alarm program

Somers Fire & Rescue department has partnered with the American Red Cross to provide free smoke alarms for Fire Prevention Month (October).

It is estimated that at least half fire casulaties woudl have been saved if there was a working smoke alarm in the home. Most fatal fires occur late at night or early in the morning, when people are asleep. Once a fire is underway smoke eliminatiesvisibility and creates deadly conditions. Residents need a smoke alarm’s warning to give them time to evacuate safely.

The Somers Fire & Rescue department reminds residents to test and check their smoke alarms on a monthly basis, replace the battery twice per year and replace the smoke alarm every ten years. Every bedroom, and each level of the home should have a working smoke alarm. Families are encouraged to develop a home escape plan, and practice the plan with their family.

Somers resident in need of a smoke alarm for their home, or assistance with existing alarms they can contact the Somers Fire & Rescue Department at (262) 620-3285, or email apisula@somers.org. Our firefighters will gladly come to the home, inspect, test and replace smoke alarms for free.
